A 3-Day Itinerary for National Park lovers in Sequoia & Kings Canyon National Park 🌲📸

Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks offer some of the most beautiful views and adventures in California! Whether you're planning an intimate elopement or a family getaway, this 3-day itinerary will guide you through some of the best spots for capturing your adventure. As a Sequoia National Park photographer, I’m excited to share my favorite must-see locations!

Day 1: Sequoia National Park

Giant Trees & Stunning Views

Morning: Giant Forest & General Sherman Tree 🌲
Kick off your adventure in the heart of Sequoia National Park at the Giant Forest. The General Sherman Tree, which is the largest tree on Earth, is a must-see! It’s a great spot for a morning hike and photos. The trail is easy to follow, and the towering sequoias will make you feel like you’ve stepped into another world. A perfect start to your day and a fantastic photo op for couples looking for a majestic backdrop. This hike is short (0.5 mile) but keeping hiking along the Congress Trail (2.7 miles) Sequoia Groves!

Afternoon: Moro Rock 🏞️
In the afternoon, make your way to Moro Rock, which is an iconic granite dome offering 360-degree views of Sequoia National Park! The 350-step-step climb might take a bit of effort, but it’s absolutely worth it for the panoramic views!

Evening: Crescent Meadow 🌅
Wrap up your day with a peaceful sunset at Crescent Meadow. Known for its quiet meadows and beautiful wildflowers in spring, it’s a perfect location to end your day. A perfect spot for couples to unwind and enjoy the beauty of the park while having their sunset photos taken. Sunset photos here are magical!

Day 2: Exploring Sequoia National Park pt 2

Sunrise to Sunset Adventures 🌄

Sunrise: Little Baldy Trail 🌅
Start your day early with a hike to Little Baldy for sunrise! This trail is about 1.8 miles (2.9 km) round-trip, with a moderate elevation gain. The summit provides incredible panoramic views of Sequoia National Park, especially with the first light of day lighting up the mountain peaks. This is a great place to soak in the quiet of the morning while taking some beautiful sunrise photos! If you want to see it for sunrise, take into consideration the distance from your car to the summit and plan accordingly!

Midday: Explore Crystal Cave in Sequoia National Park
After your sunrise hike, visit Crystal Cave! This underground cave is filled with sparkling and unique crystals making it a must-see for any adventurer or photographer! To explore this magical cave, reserve your tour tickets in advance. Tours fill up fast, especially in the summer months, so planning ahead is key to securing your spot!

Sunset: Beetle Rock 🌄
Finish your adventure at Beetle Rock for an epic sunset view. This short uphill trail (around 0.5 miles round-trip) offers panoramic views of the park, especially as the sun sets behind the mountains. This is another PERFECT location for sunset photos. Whether you’re eloping, adventuring with friends, or just soaking in the beauty of Sequoia, Beetle Rock provides an unforgettable ending to your day! It is one of my go-to locations when I want to end the day!

Day 3: Kings Canyon National Park — A Day of Exploration and Serenity 🌄

Morning: Zumwalt Meadow 🌿
On your third day, get ready for a short but sweet adventure to Zumwalt Meadow in Kings Canyon. This meadow is surrounded by dramatic cliffs and a beautiful meadow. It’s known as “little yosemite” but without the crowds! This quiet area of the park is great for couples looking for a more relaxed vibe away from the crowds.

Afternoon: Scenic Drive to Roaring River Falls 🚗
Next, take a scenic drive through Kings Canyon to visit Roaring River Falls. This waterfall is one of the park’s hidden gems (though not one of my super secret ones 😉). The waterfall is a great spot for photographers looking to capture a waterfall in the park. There’s a short trail leading to the falls, super short and super easy!

Afternoon: Visit Grant Grove - The second largest tree in the world!

Want to relax a bit and by something from the gift store? (A NATIONAL PARK GIFT SHOP CAN TAKE ALL MY MONEY.) Then explore Grant Grove. It is a super short hike from the parking lot! Although, there are some hidden gems nearby the grove that I share with my couple only! If ya know then ya know! 😉

Evening: Sunset at Panorama Point 🌅
End your adventure with a beautiful sunset at Panorama Point. As it’s name explains, this viewpoint offers sweeping vistas of the entire valley below. It’s the perfect location to wrap up your trip and capture some epic photos with loved ones or a stunning solo shot for your travel albums!

Tips for Your Sequoia & Kings Canyon Adventure 📸:

  • Distance Matters: The drive between Sequoia and Kings Canyon can take around an hour, so plan accordingly for travel time to get the most out of each park. Although the guide is 2 days in Sequoia and 1 in Kings Canyon there is SOOO much of Kings Canyon to see that’s not included here.

  • Pack Layers: The weather in these parks can change quickly, so it’s always best to have layers on hand, especially if you're venturing up into higher altitudes.

  • Best Time to Visit: Spring and fall are the ideal times to visit, offering mild weather and fewer crowds, plus photo opportunities with the changing colors of the leaves or fresh blooms!
